Description
The icon depicts St. Sharbel – a Lebanese monk, hermit and ascetic. He is an extremely inspiring figure for me. After reading his biography, I decided to paint an icon that could at least partially reflect the depth and mysticism of the saint.
In the icon, we see St. Sharbel, holding a scroll, symbolizing knowledge and awareness being shared with the world. To the right are four important moments: joining the Maronite monastery of St. Marona in the village of Annaja at the age of 23; a life dedicated to prayer; his death and monks watching over saint body.
The last scene shows an extraordinary phenomenon – after being buried over the tomb of St. Sharbel appeared an unusual bright glow, lasting for weeks. This glow caused crowds of believers to come to the hermit’s tomb every night. After exhumation, Sharbel’s body was found to be in excellent condition, retaining the elasticity and body temperature of a living person, and secreting a liquid described by witnesses as sweat and blood. Despite the removal of the entrails and drying, the substance, which was considered a relic, continued to ooze from the body of the deceased.
